First Light

An excerpt from a devotional love story for married couples.

Read the opening

Friday traffic faded as Sienna and Caleb wound their way into the hills, night falling soft over Riverstone Hot Springs. The retreat had been spontaneous—a single cabin, a creek, and steaming mineral waters beckoning them to leave behind routines and rediscover desire.

The cedar cabin was spare, bathed in lantern light and the hush of running water. Sienna unpacked quietly, heart pounding with hope and something more earthy—a boldness that had felt buried in city life.

As she set blankets on the porch, Caleb came up behind her, hands sliding to rest at her waist. She pressed back, shivering in anticipation.

“Want to explore the springs?” he asked, lips brushing her hair.

Sienna nodded. Quickly, she slipped off her shirt, standing before him in just lace and nerves. Caleb’s pupils widened with both worship and want.

Under the stars, steam hugged their bare skin. Caleb pulled Sienna close, water warming every shy shiver. She wrapped her legs around him, floating, letting new courage drive her movement. In his arms, she whispered:

“Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”

— Song of Songs 4:16, NIV

He leaned in, their mouths wet, the night’s heavy silence broken by laughter and whispered prayer. They tasted one another—water, salt, longing, delight—claiming this hidden place as their starting line, their altar: love unafraid, play reborn, bodies worshiping in holy abandon.
